When I moved to the east coast from Texas, I never really understood “east coast” beaches….I never understood the smell of the salty air, the fried chicken, the fresh seafood – all mixed in with whiff of sunscreen and beer. On winter days like today when it’s dark at 430pm and I’m all bundled up in a coat and gloves, I really yearn to pile the kiddos in the car, roll the windows down over the Bay Bridge and stop at some roadside stands for some summer plums or strawberries on the way. Ahh beach life…I miss it. There’s just this feeling of leaving the beltway craziness behind when you cross the bridge. Living so close to the Delaware beaches is one of the reasons I’ll likely never leave the mid-atlantic….once you go Rehoboth, you never go back:-)
If anyone is heading out there tomorrow for the first time – Rehoboth and Dewey are amazing in the off-season! Here are some of our faves:
For Breakfast: Nothing beats the French Toast and Bloody Mary’s at the Starboard….Go early!
For Lunch: In the summer, pick up a sandwich on the way to the beach at Fifer’s in Dewey. Or pick up a bucket of fried chicken at Jimmy’s Grille.
For Dinner: Salt Air – Hands down the best restaurant in Rehoboth! (Though Blue Moon and Back Porch Café come close!)
What to do? Even on cold days, the beaches are amazing. Pack a picnic, bring the dog and kiddos and let them run out the crazies. We’ve never taken the Lewes Ferry out to Cape May, but people rave about it. Cape Henlopen State Park is amazing (and no traffic to get there in the off-season); there are some amazing bike trails around Rehoboth; try out the beer flights at Dogfish Brewery; or just walk around the Boardwalk and the stores near the beach (Browseabout Books and The Christmas Spirit are two faves that won’t let you down!)
